When it comes to choosing a provider and stream of education for an outdoor professional or recreationalist, it can be confusing to ascertain what certification is best for your needs. Our passion at Canadian Outdoor Med is to do a customized needs assessment and develop first aid training for your group or organization to be delivered in real time, in the environment you will be working or playing in.
There are 3 main streams of outdoor first aid courses offered in BC;
1. Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) - This is a 90 hour course geared for outdoor professionals and is the standard for most professional and volunteer ski and bike patrols. The Canadian Ski Patrol course roughly follows an OEC curriculum. This course also focuses on technical skills such as commercial splints, spinal boards, etc.
2. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) - There are 3 levels - 20 hour Wilderness First Aid (WFA), 40 hour Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA), and a full 80 hour Wilderness First Responder (WFR). This stream is geared towards backcountry recreationalists and professionals, and focuses more on decision making rather than training in specific equipment. For practicing health care professionals, we recommend the Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) which offers a more detailed approach.
3. Occupational First Aid (OFA) - levels 1,2,3. This is occupational first aid - geared for industrial applications, and leads into EMR and paramedic training. This course is heavy on protocols and specific equipment for industry.
It is important when choosing a course that you ensure the curriculum is from a recognized regulatory body. We are authorized providers of curriculum from the Wilderness Medical Society, The National Ski Patrol, the National Lifesaving Society and Canadian Wilderness Medical Training. This gives us the unique ability to offer nationally recognized certification for your occupation, and also the ability to offer combination courses with multiple certifications in one course to optimize your organization's time and budget. Our specialty is working with professional groups, as we have tailored courses for ski and mountain bike guides.
Our instructors have over a decade of experience in outdoor education and emergency medical care. We are well equipped to perform a non-biased needs assessment and suggest or design a program that will best fit those needs. We are passionate about designing custom courses and providing them in the actual environment your group works or plays in. We would rather be outside and on our bikes and skis than in a classroom, and our educational style reflects that. We can provide OEC, OFA and WFR training programs based on need, as well as custom combo courses that give multiple certifications in one course block. All of our courses also include a Standard First Aid and a National Lifesaving society CPR certification.
With the current crisis, we have pivoted to offer online modules to better serve, and moving forward, we feel that this can be a great option to allow busy professionals to spend less time in the classroom. See our Online Learning section for available options.
