We are passionate about improving the safety of guests and athletes at events of all kinds, but our specialty is event medical coverage in BC for outdoor sporting events. From mountain biking races to trail running series, gran fondos to film sets, our medical consultants bring real field expertise so your event can run safely, smoothly and confidently.

What We Cover

Our team has supported some of the highest-risk outdoor sporting events in BC, including Gran Fondos with over 6,000 participants and moto Hard Enduro events. From small local races to major international competitions like the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, we have been on site to help.

No matter the type of event, having medical care close by is essential. Our medical consultants are trained paramedics, ready to help stabilize everything from common injuries to more severe injuries and apply care quickly when it counts. We are aware that accidents can happen at any moment during high-intensity events, and having quick access to on-site medical assistance gives organizers, participants, and their families valuable peace of mind.

Film Medical Support

Beyond sporting events, we also offer on-site film medical consulting. Production directors and crews can count on our medical consultants to be on the scene, whatever the situation. This service pairs closely with our Risk Management offerings, including Emergency Response Plans and site visits.

Our Medical Team

Canadian Outdoor Medical Consulting is led by Catherine Malette, who spent years as a Whistler ski patroller and Critical Care paramedic, and Matthew Smith, a pediatric Critical Care paramedic and Blackcomb ski patroller. As medical consultants, they bring real-world health and safety expertise and knowledge to every event.

Our roots go back to the Blackcomb Institute for Skier Safety, founded by patroller Wayne Flann in the late 1980s, and carried forward through the Pacific Alpine Institute before Canadian Outdoor Medical Consulting was formed. That history has shaped how we train, prepare and communicate with event organizers today.

We are proud to be affiliated with organizations including the National Ski Patrol, Avalanche Canada, the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, the Wilderness Medical Society and the Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative. Beyond event coverage, we also offer first aid training courses for individuals and organizations who want to build their own health and safety knowledge.

Yes. Alongside on-site medical coverage, we offer Risk Management services including Emergency Response Plan design, Avalanche Safety Plans, site visits, waivers and insurance support. These strategies help event organizers avoid planning gaps and limit liability.
